This question comes up more than you’d think, especially from people doing an escape room as part of a date night or birthday. The short answer: wear something you can move in and don’t stress about it.
Comfort beats clever every time
You’re going to be reaching into things, kneeling to check under furniture, moving between puzzle stations, and generally not sitting still for an hour. Anything that restricts your movement or that you’d be worried about messing up is going to be a distraction.
Jeans and a t-shirt are genuinely fine. So are leggings, casual pants, or whatever you’d wear to run a casual errand. The goal is to forget about your outfit once the game starts.
Shoes matter more than most people think
Closed-toe shoes are the move. High heels, dress shoes with slick bottoms, and flip-flops all slow you down in ways you won’t appreciate when the clock is running. If you’re coming from somewhere nicer, consider keeping a spare pair of casual shoes in your car.
What tends to get in the way
Bulky bags you have to keep track of, dangling jewelry that catches on things, anything fragile you’d be constantly thinking about — these all pull your attention away from the game. Most venues have somewhere to store your stuff. Travel light if you can.
One Amarillo-specific note
Amarillo can be genuinely cold and windy in the winter when you walk from the parking lot. Bring a layer you can take off once you’re inside. In the summer, going from 100 degrees outside to air conditioning can make you want something to put on after the game. Neither affects your gameplay, but they’ll affect how you feel walking in and out.
If this is a date night and you want to dress up — go for it. Just skip the heels and make sure whatever you’re wearing lets you move freely. Looking nice and playing well aren’t mutually exclusive.
