This is one of the first things people ask when they’re booking, and it’s a smart question to answer before you show up. The game itself is usually 60 minutes, but plan for about 90 minutes total from the time you walk in.
Here’s why.
Before the clock starts
You don’t just walk in and start the game. Before you step into the room, there’s a quick orientation — safety basics, what you’re allowed to do and what you’re not, how hints work, and the setup for your specific experience. This part usually runs 10 to 15 minutes, and it matters. A good briefing makes the game better because you’re not wasting the first 10 minutes of your hour second-guessing the rules.
We also handle waivers at check-in, which is another reason why arriving a little early matters.
The game itself
At Amarillo Escape and Mystery, our escape room games run 60 minutes. Some venues do 45 or 75, so always check the booking page if you’re going somewhere new. The 60-minute format works because it’s long enough for a real story to unfold but short enough to keep the energy up throughout.
After the game
When the game ends — whether you escaped or not — there’s a short wrap-up. If you ran out of time, we’ll walk you through what you were close to finishing and show you the ending you were working toward. If you escaped, there’s usually a moment for photos before the next group comes in.
What this means for planning your night
If you’re doing dinner before or after, or if you’ve got a babysitter with a hard cutoff, budget 90 minutes from the time of arrival. That gives you time for check-in, the briefing, the full game, and the wrap-up without feeling rushed.
Arriving 10 to 15 minutes early is genuinely helpful. Your game starts on time, your group has a minute to settle, and you don’t start the clock already stressed from rushing.
Does everyone escape? Most first-time teams don’t. That’s by design. Teams that use hints strategically tend to have the most fun, regardless of the outcome.
